THE AUTO INDUSTRY....
Starting from my first venture...
Eicher Motors Ltd.

Eicher pioneered the Tractor industry in India. Today, besides Tractors, Eicher manufactures and markets Light Commercial Vehicles, Enfield, Motorcycles, Automotive Gears and export vehicles, aggregates, components and hand tools. The Eicher Group is a significant player in the Indian industry with a turnover of Rs. 9500 million.

6000 employees located across 10 manufacturing and 30 marketing offices all over the country constitute the Eicher Group. An extensive Vendor network (comprising over 1300 committed vendors) has given Eicher the confidence to indigenise the latest technology in the shortest possible time. Eicher's nationwide dealer network (comprising over 600 dealers) helps them to remain on call with customers and meet their needs.

Excellent development and product engineering facilities are available at each of Eicher's major manufacturing locations. Over 300 employees work exclusively in the area of R&D. This is what has enabled Eicher to indigenously develop and launch the 35 HP Tractor. Eicher's engineers have developed over 75 applications for the Eicher Light Commercial Vehicles and introduced the 9 ton GVW truck. Plans are afoot to launch the 535cc and 624cc Enfield Motorcycles, shortly

Eicher was one of the first in the country to extend Total Quality in everything. The Eicher Tractor manufacturing facility at Faridabad and the Eicher Tractor Engineering Centre at Ballabgarh have been awarded the ISO 9001 certification. Eicher Tractors manufacturing facility at Hyderabad, Eicher Demm Parwanoo and Ramon & Demm have been awarded the ISO 9002 certification.

Having achieved world quality standards, Eicher today competes successfully with reputed international companies and are also selling their products to quality conscious customers the world over.

Banning plying of diesel taxis registered in the neighbouring states of Delhi, the Supreme Court (SC) said that no taxi, other than those running in CNG, would be allowed to operate in the national capital region (NCR) unless they were certified to be Euro-II emission norm compliant. A bench comprising Chief Justice A. S. Anand, Justice B. N. Kirpal and Justice V. N. Khare said, " It is clarified that all diesel vehicles must conform to Euro-II emission norms for plying in NCR ".

Volvo India

Volvo's entry into India coincides with the changing demands of the Indian economy. And these demands are not merely in rising volumes but in quality as well. Volvo believes that an increasingly technologically aware India will make an ideal base for production and global sourcing.

Volvo is one of the largest producers of heavy commercial vehicles in the world. Volvo's trucks are reputed for their performance and economy and are the flag bearers in their production activities in India. However, Volvo has its overall focus in the commercial transport sector and activities are underway to introduce buses and construction equipment. Volvo Penta Diesel engines have been selling in India for over 2 years and have an installation base of over 1000 units.

Volvo in India has its focus in providing economical transport solutions in consonance with its values of safety, quality, and environmental care.

Scope
Volvo inaugurated its manufacturing facility for heavy commercial vehicles in Hoskote, near Bangalore, on the 15th of June 98. Backed by an initial investment of around Rs 300 crore, this unit will manufacture heavy commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of over 16 tonnes. The unit has a capacity of 4000 units per annum, which it plans to achieve in the next 4-5 years.

Volvo at Bangalore offers the same quality levels that Volvo is known for worldwide. Volvo has plans to eventually develop its operations in India into a cornerstone for its global production and distribution systems. This would mean that the vehicles, components, and services would be sourced from India for assembly and application at an international scale.

Volvo - Global
Incorporated in 1927, Volvo has maintained a consistent focus in the transport and automotive vehicle industry. Volvo is today one of the industry's most global player, with more than 70,000 employees, production facilities in over 20 countries and sales worldwide.

Volvo, a Latin word meaning, "I roll", is one of the world's strongest brand names, with a strong international orientation. More than 40% of Volvo's workforce is employed outside Sweden and markets outside account for 90 per cent of the sales. Vigorous efforts are being made in new markets in Asia, with India as one of the key focus markets.

Volvo's objective is to strengthen its position as one of the world's leading manufacturers of trucks, buses, cars, construction equipment, aero engines and engines for marine and industrial applications.

Core Values
At Volvo, safety is an intrinsic component of the company's philosophy and has lead to a number of pioneering innovations over the years. Volvo's core values are quality, safety and environmental care - in harmony with strong fundamental values in today and tomorrow's societies.

In conjunction with the U N environmental conference in Stockholm in 1972, Volvo became the first automotive producer in the world to declare its environmental responsibilities. Volvo's clear objective is to be among the vehicle producers that have advanced the furthest in the environmental area by the year 2000. In that light, the undesirable emissions from the diesel engines of Volvo's heavy vehicles have been reduced by 70-85 per cent during the last two decades.Volvo Trucks (in India too) conform to Euro II norms and are one of the safest cabs in the world.

Volvo's strength lies in its brand and personnel. At Volvo, leadership is defined as the capacity to utilise and develop the total competence of every employee. As a dynamic organisation, Volvo is ready for change, and is continuously developing new work patterns to drive an eventful tomorrow.

Some thing about the telco's.....

Tata Engineering and Locomotive was established in 1945 with the immediate objective of producing steam locomotives. In 1954, the company entered into a technical and financial collaboration with Daimler-Benz for the manufacture of commercial vehicles. By the end of the technical collaboration in 1969, Telco had not only become an independent producer of medium commercial vehicles with a negligible import content, but had also developed the capacity of fully designing and manufacturing such vehicles.

Along with the production of steam locomotives, Telco also embarked upon the manufacture of other general engineering equipment before it identified and settled upon its main line of business as it stands today - automobile and construction equipment machinery.

Today, Telco is the largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in India with a sales turnover of Rs. 73.63 billion (1997-98). Worldwide it ranks among the top ten in the manufacture of vehicle in the 5 - 15 tonne range. Telco manufactures the entire automobile range from heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs) up to 35 tonnes, to light commercial vehicles (LCVs) down to 2.5 tonnes, passenger cars and multi-utility vehicles. It has the largest market share in virtually all commercial vehicle market segments - right from HCVs to MCVs and LCVs.

Telco has modern plants at Jamshedpur, Pune and Lucknow. A fourth plant for special application vehicles is currently been set up at Dharwad.

Telco is the only automobile company in India, which has a crash test facility where new products are thoroughly tested. Telco has entered into a joint venture with Cummins forming Tata Cummins to manufacture 'environmental friendly green engines'.

The company has service set-ups at every 100 kms on national highways, 450 Service Centres across India, 24 hour ATM (Any Time Mobile) centres in Mumbai and Ahmedabad, and full fledged Customer Training Cells in the Service Centres to enable customers to make the best use of their vehicles.

Telco has been exporting its vehicles since 1961. Today, Europe accounts for 35% of Telco's international sales with Benelux, Italy, Spain and UK being the main markets.

For the future, Telco has plans to significantly increase its presence in the passenger car segment.
